While
popular worldwide, tango is one of the best known sounds
of Buenos Aires.
Born on the docks at the beginning of the 20th century,
it began as the soundtrack of the dark underbelly of
the city and grew up to become an emblem of authenticity
and popular tradition. With the passsage of time, tango
has become a musical genre that is rich in both harmony
and melody. Its lyrics are the product of songwriters
who also double as philosophers, tackling issues that
are common to any citizen of the world, not just Argentina.
With the advent of people such as Astor Piazzolla and
Euduardo Rovira, tango became a bonified cult sound,
as evidenced on the first of the two discs, while the
second demonstrates its experimental and more modern
period, reaching heights unimagined by its original
artists.
After a period of stagnation during the 70s and 80s,
tango was revived in the 90s, in the hands of new musicians
whose roots are in the world of electronic music and
were enthralled by its sinuous rythms and unique instrumental
combinations. Thus electronic tango was born, a new
genre that, much in the manner of its predecessors such
as Carlos Gardel, as gained worldwide recognition today.
Tango Yesterday & Tomorrow offers a faithful rendition
of these two scenes; the original with all of its creators
and their songs which are now classics and the second
disque offers a selection of the most conspicious artists
today, also represented by their best known material.
These two disques provide a unique overview of the past
and future of this illustrious genre. |
